Town Centre and Local Businesses

Prestatyn is a rewarding place to shop. High Street names sit shoulder to shoulder with family businesses, specialist shops and a thrice weekly market. The majority of businesses are to be found along the High Street, which climbs uphill from the Railway Station to join Meliden Road, on the lower slopes of Prestatyn Hillside. A number of shops are also to be found on King's Avenue and Nant Hall Road, both of which join about half way up the High Street. There is easy access to the town's shopping facilities, with High Street parking, a free Town Council car park adjacent to the Parish Church, and additionally four Pay & Display car parks in and around the town centre. Public transport is also well catered for, with the nearby Railway and Bus Stations providing regular services.

Prestatyn High Street is noted for its clean and pleasant shopping environment, and in particular, the attractive backdrop created by the town's wooded hillside. Outstanding flower displays in the Summer months have earned the town numerous Wales in Bloom awards in recent years, and annual festive occasions always result in equally as impressive street and window displays to entice the shopper. Prominent events held in the High Street each year include the Classic Car Show, Youth Arts Festival events, the Carnival Parade, the Flower Show, the Marché de France, the Jazz Festival and Christmas celebrations.

Among the very varied selection of shops in the Town Centre is to be found an increasing number of quality restaurants, bars and cafés, frequently commended for their high standard of cuisine and service. The nature of Prestatyn means that such friendly, personal service is not just limited to the restaurants however, but is a well-known characteristic of the town which all businesses strive to achieve.

An exciting development shortly due to take place in Prestatyn Town Centre is the construction of a Tesco store on the lower High Street. At the time of writing, Tesco has already received outline planning permission for the project, and premises due for demolition have been vacated. It is hoped that building work will commence in the next several months. In November 2002, Denbighshire County Council's cabinet decided in principle to make use of a compulsory purchase order in order to allow Tesco to acquire all the land necessary for the development. In June 2003, the cabinet voted to confirm the use of the compulsory purchase powers. A detailed planning application is now being submitted by Tesco. There has in general been a very warm response to Tesco's proposals. Prestatyn & District Business Association vigorously supports the plans, which it feels will help to draw customers, who have, in recent years, been attracted by nearby out-of-town developments, back into Prestatyn Town Centre. The Association has also supported the building of an Aldi supermarket on Meliden Road, and this was completed in August 2000. Currently, the Town Centre offers a number of smaller stores, including Iceland and Kwik Save on Nant Hall Road, Alldays on Meliden Road, and Spar supermarkets in the High Street and in King's Avenue. Also complementing the High Street from 9am to 4pm on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays, is the town's outdoor market, sited only a few metres away from the High Street, next to the Bus Station.

Traditionally, Thursday has been the early closing day for retailers in Prestatyn. However, nowadays most shops are open from 9.00am to 5.30pm Monday-Saturday, and an increasing number open their doors on Sundays.

Prestatyn has recently joined other towns in North Wales, with the installation of a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system covering the Town Centre. This, along with help from Denbighshire County Council and Prestatyn Town Council, support from our new Town Centre Manager, plus other proposed investments in Prestatyn by organisations such as Tesco and the Welsh Development Agency, give Prestatyn Business Association confidence in the future of Prestatyn Town Centre.
