Owned by Network Rail, the station building is currently managed by Arriva Trains Wales under the guidance of the Strategic Rail Authority. It was opened in 1897, replacing an older station which stood a short distance east of the present site.

The railway line through the area, running from Chester along the coast, was first known as the Chester and Holyhead Railway. Its construction began in the early 1840s and it was opened in 1848. The line was later taken over by the London and North Western Railway Company (L&NWR), before coming under the control of the London Midland and Scottish Railway Company (LMS), and then British Rail following nationalisation. Nowadays, the UK rail system is once again run by private companies and the line forms part of Network Rail's national network.
