Pant y Fachwen Cottage

In 1999, Denbighshire Countryside Service volunteers unearthed the remains of an old cottage on Prestatyn Hillside, located alongside the Offa's Dyke Path.

This cottage, Pant-y-Fachwen, was known to exist because a small stub of wall was visible through the vegetation, and it was marked on early maps. However, it is believed that the cottage had lain otherwise undiscovered for at least 50 years. The remains of the building were excavated and reconsolidated by an environmental task force clearing the Offa's Dyke Path.

The cottage is cut into the hillside and uses the limestone bedrock in places for its walls. It has a large fireplace at one end which must have been essential to keep out the bitter winter cold. Only the lower floor is visible now, with a wall in the middle dividing the space into two rooms. It is thought that there must have been an upper floor of some sort, as census records show that towards the end of the 19th century as many as 11 or 12 people from one family lived there.

Records indicate the cottage was the home of a mining family; certainly at one time members of the family worked in the Talargoch mines on the outskirts of Meliden. The cottage has been uninhabited since the end of the 19th century and is believed to be at least 200 years old. Surrounding Pant-y-Fachwen are the remains of a small outbuilding and what is probably a cottage garden.
