Prestatyn and District Horticultural Society
The town's Horticultural Society is for gardeners who wish to improve their knowledge of plants and gardens and meet others with a similar interest.
Prestatyn Horticultural Society at the Flower Show |
Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.15pm for 7.30pm in Trinity Methodist Church Hall on Pendre Avenue, at which an outside speaker's talk forms the core. For the competition-minded there is a monthly competition and one can meet fellow members over a cup of tea or coffee. Several visits to gardens at a distance are organised each year and individual members contribute to the running of the town's Flower Show, at which the Society runs a plant stall. The display of annuals in the Pendre Memorial Gardens is maintained by the Society, as well as the central rose bed and surrounds. Members are building a collection of periwinkle plants there.
The Society was founded in 1922, which makes it second only to the Cricket Club in its length of existence as a Prestatyn club or society. Its title reflects the period in which it was founded rather than its present status and function; but whilst consideration has been given to substituting "Gardening Club" for "Horticultural Society", at present there are no plans for this.
The subscription for 2008/9 is £5 per annum and £1 per meeting to include tea or coffee. Further details can be obtained from the secretary - R. Hunt on Prestatyn 852131.

Prestatyn Vinca (Periwinckle) Collection - 4th Annual Report 2007 (Abridged)
The Prestatyn Horticultural Society and Prestatyn Town Council Vinca Collection is located at the Pendre Memorial Gardens, which is located on the corner of Gronant Road and Fforddlas, near the top of the High Street.
 V. difformis 'Jenny Pym' |
At the end of the year 2006 we had all but one of the varieties in the Vinca major species, though at the time of writing this abridgement (February 2007) we have all of the RHS listed V major varieties plus an unlisted variety – V. major subsp. major. We lack one variety in the V. difformis species – V. difformis ‘Oxford’. The larger number of varieties within the V. minor species, (numbered at 29 in the current RHS Plantfinder Internet list) has proved more challenging; we lack 6 varieties, partly through having experienced some losses. We have a number of unlisted species thanks largely to gifts from the curator of Prague Botanical Gardens, Pavel Sekerka. We have V. herbaceae, a single variety species according to the RHS list, but our specimen of V sardoa the other single variety species, lost in 2005 has yet to be replaced. It is hoped that the collection, situated in part in Pendre Memorial Gardens, may be used now to provide roots for ground cover elsewhere there, in substitution for wood chip.
