Prestatyn Beaches

Promenade and Beach
Promenade and Beach

There are three sandy beaches along the Prestatyn coastline - Barkby Beach, Central Beach and Ffrith Beach.

A promenade joins the three beaches, and, at around 4 miles in length, is popular for leisurely strolls and cycling. It has recently been incorporated into the new National Cycle Network.

There are spectacular views right along the promenade, extending from the Snowdonian Mountains, the Great Orme of Llandudno and Anglesey to the west, through to the Wirral to the east, and Prestatyn Hillside to the south. On very clear days, glimpses can also be caught of the Isle of Man, the Cumbrian Mountains and Blackpool Tower, while the BHP Billiton Petroleum Douglas oil and gas platform in Liverpool Bay is usually clearly visible.

A new ferry service linking nearby Mostyn with Dublin commenced in November 2001, and ferries can now be seen passing the Prestatyn coastline in a deep sea channel. Wind farms are currently in the process of being constructed off the North Wales coast by National Wind Power, while separate plans by Tidal Electric involve the idea of harnessing tidal power.

Detailed information on the Liverpool Bay oil and gas production, and the offshore windfarms and tidal power scheme, is available on the Offshore Industry Page.

Tidal Predictions
High and low water tide times for Prestatyn can always be calculated by using data provided on the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory's website. Twenty minutes should be subtracted from each of the times given in their Tide Table for Liverpool to give times specific to Prestatyn.

Barkby Beach

Good Beach Guide 2003
Good Beach Guide 2003
This is the most easterly of the beaches, and extends into the Gronant Dunes Local Nature Reserve. Barkby Beach is recommended in the Good Beach Guide 2003. Produced annually by the Marine Conservation Society, beaches highlighted in this Guide have achieved the highest water quality standards and are not affected by continuous inadequately treated sewage discharges. Further information can be found at the bottom of this page.

There is a car park here, and adjacent to this is Prestatyn Sailing Club. Yearly membership of the Club can be obtained via Mr. Jamie Pearson (Commodore) - Tel.: (01745) 888227. Also nearby is a pitch and putt course, as well as picnic and play areas. Just behind the beach is Prestatyn's 18 hole seaside championship links golf course, and Pontin's Holiday Village.

Central Beach

Seaside Award 2003
Seaside Award 2003

Central Beach is located between the Ffrith and Barkby Beaches, only half a mile from the town centre.

There is disabled access to the promenade, and also a large car park nearby. The beach possesses the ENCAMS Seaside Award for 2003. This distinctive yellow and blue flag award is only given to beaches that are clean, well managed and have good water quality. Further information on the award can be found at the bottom of this page, and also at The Seaside Awards Website.

Crazy Golf Course and Nova Centre

The Nova Centre is located on the sea front at Central Beach, and offers a swimming pool, a health and fitness studio, a restaurant and bar and a ballroom.

Just in front of the Nova Centre is a Crazy Golf Course.

Central Beach also marks the beginning of the Offa's Dyke National Trail, which runs south to Chepstow. The Offa's Dyke and Tourist Information Centre is located here, and offers an audio-visual presentation of the history of the Offa's Dyke Path from Easter until late September each year.

Ffrith Beach

Ffrith Beach
Ffrith Beach

Located at Ffrith Beach is the North Wales Bowls Centre.

Also here are the Ffrith Beach Festival Gardens. It is hoped that the future of this as yet unfinished site will be known soon.

In the Ffrith Beach area are the remaining sand dunes of west Prestatyn. The dunes have been fenced, and Marram grass has been planted to protect the area as a habitat for plants, birds and small animals. Further information on sand dunes in Prestatyn can be found on the Gronant Dunes page.

The former Tower Beach site, just to the west of Ffrith Beach, is currently undergoing redevelopment. New houses are being constructed by Barratt Homes and Anwyl Homes, in a development that has been named Tower Gardens. Denbighshire County Council have been working closely with Cofton Ltd. (Developers) during the development of the land, which, in addition to housing, will include a Public Open Space, construction of new vehicular and pedestrian accesses and coast protection works. Protection and enhancement of the sand dune system was seen as a priority and Cofton have funded various projects under the close supervision of the Countryside Service. The sand dune system was handed over by the developers to Denbighshire County Council in October 2002 and a commited sum has been made available for future management.

Seaside Awards and Beach Cleanliness

ENCAMS Awards Brochure 2003
ENCAMS Awards Brochure 2003
The bathing water at each of the beaches along the Prestatyn coastline is sampled 20 times during the Summer season (1st May - 30th September). Central Beach is an EC Identified Beach which is therefore sampled by the Environment Agency. Barkby Beach and Ffrith Beach are Non EC Identified Beaches. Denbighshire County Council samples these and in addition, carries out a survey of beach litter at the time of sampling (Garber Survey). The results of the latest water quality tests, based on standards laid down in the EC Bathing Water Directive, as well as information about previous years, are displayed on information boards at the beaches.

In 2002, Central Beach and Ffrith Beach achieved the EC Mandatory standard, while Barkby Beach attained the higher EC Guideline standard.

All Seaside Award beaches have to fulfil 29 criteria under six general headings - Water Quality, Beach and Intertidal Area, Safety, Management, Cleansing and Information and Education. Copies of the latest Seaside Awards Guide are available by telephoning (01942) 612639. Further information about the Seaside Awards is available from: ENCAMS, Elizabeth House, The Pier, Wigan, WN3 4EX; E-mail: enquiries@encams.org.

In order to be recommended in the Good Beach Guide, beaches must achieve the Marine Conservation Society Guideline Pass and not be affected by any continuous sewage outfalls which discharge raw, preliminary or primary treated sewage. A MCS Guideline Pass is awarded when 100% of samples pass the EC Mandatory Standard, 80% or more of the samples pass the EC Guideline Total and Faecal Coliform Standards and 90% or more of the samples pass the EC Guideline Faecal Streptococci Standard. Further information about the Good Beach Guide is available from: MCS, 9 Gloucester Road, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, HR9 5BU; Tel.: (01989) 566017; Fax: (01989) 567815; E-mail: info@mcsuk.org.

Details of organisations that arrange volunteer beach surveys and clean-ups can be found on the Natural Environment Page.
