When the idea of Virtual Prestatyn was first envisaged in early 1998, it was quickly embraced by Prestatyn & District Business Association as a means of worldwide promotion for the town. Presented to the Town Council some months later, the plans for a town website received full support. When similar enthusiasm was displayed by Denbighshire County Council, this allowed us to begin developing Virtual Prestatyn as an "Official Site" for the town.
In September of 1998, the domain name "prestatyn.org.uk" was registered. Construction of the site commenced soon afterwards. A limited amount of information on the town was available by the end of the year. Development has continued ever since. Creating a comprehensive site from scratch has not been easy. Thousands of hours of voluntary work must have been put in to date!
It is hoped that Virtual Prestatyn proves to be a useful resource for both residents of Prestatyn, and also for potential visitors to the town. We aim to portray the great variety of aspects the town has to offer all year round, from wildlife and leisure walks along the sand dunes, the beaches, or on Prestatyn Hillside, to attractive residential areas, individual shopping, excellent restaurants, and magnificent views of the North Wales coast and beyond.
The interest created by Virtual Prestatyn has been considerable; as of the end of January 2002, we were approaching 28,000 hits to the Home Page of the site, and within the previous 12 months alone, surfers had visited from as far afield as the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Japan, Ireland, Spain, Singapore, Sweden, Poland, Taiwan, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Finland, Italy, Norway, Austria, South Africa, Portugal, Malaysia, Dominica, Argentina, Greece, Slovakia, Hungary, China, Hong Kong, Brunei Darussalam, Oman, Venezuela, Brazil, Czech Republic, Russia, Niue, Croatia, Mexico, Indonesia, Israel, India, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Luxembourg, Malta, Ukraine, Thailand, Estonia, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines!
We have a wide range of proposals for future new content of Virtual Prestatyn, including electronic postcards, an A-Z list of pages, a mailing list to inform of updates to the website, a page on the Offa's Dyke National Trail, and much more. Input from interested parties is very welcome. Please e-mail development@prestatyn.org.uk with your comments, queries and suggestions for possible content.
